DataCo was formed in 2001 with the express intention of providing data services for the UK professional football leagues, their member clubs and their various customers. These services would all be centred in the areas of data and particularly digital data content.

The leagues have been providing licences for the use of their data since 1959. The formation of DataCo provides a one-stop-shopping experience for potential customers of the leagues' data and associated products.

During 2001 DataCo reached agreement with the Scottish Premier League Ltd (SPL) and Scottish Football League (SFL) to provide similar services for their clubs.

DataCo now provides data, statistics, live match feeds from the matches of 134 UK professional football clubs represented by 4 league bodies. Still image photography can also be provided for the 92 clubs in the FAPL and FL.

DataCo manages the various agreements required for the licensing of content in any application worldwide. Football rights are complicated and the objective of DataCo is to ease the understanding of the rights and the obtaining of the necessary licences.
